You’ve got maybe a year or two to sort it out

Planet Zoo and Planet Coaster developer Frontier is working on a fresh Planet title that involves neither zoos nor rollercoasters—a rather unexpected twist. The project actually features a "completely new setting," though it will still fall under the strategy management genre.

"We've begun development on a brand-new Planet Game franchise, offering all the familiarity you adore from the Planet series, but set in a completely new environment for us compared to Planet Coaster or Planet Zoo, one that still blends our passion for creativity, management, and meaningful simulation," explains head of player engagement Richard Stephenson in a Discord post, preserved on Reddit.

I had no idea it was even possible to set games on planets that aren't theme parks or collections of caged animals. Strange new horizons, indeed. As I peer out my apartment window, the possibilities feel overwhelming. How about, say, Planet Man Walking Dog? Or Planet Hole Dug By Squirrel?

Presumably, the new Planet game won't be a dinosaur game, a spaceship game, a racing game, or one set in the Grim Darkness of the Far Future. Considering portfolio diversity, Frontier likely has those areas covered with Jurassic World Evolution, Elite Dangerous, F1 Manager, and Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin.

As for when we'll hear more, GameWatcher points to a relevant line in Frontier's latest earnings report, which states that "a new own-IP CMS [construction and management simulation] game is confirmed for FY28." That gives us plenty of time to catch up on Nate Crowley's (RPS in peace) series of comedic writings about Planet Zoo. Start with the ostrich, then check out the warthogs, and finish off with Nate's "grim facsimile of HBO's Deadwood." Nate, where are you? Please come back.
