Peter Sarsgaard has been added to the cast of HBO's The Last of Us adaptation for its upcoming third season.
As reported by Deadline, Sarsgaard will portray a new character named Amon, who is not featured in the video games. The outlet notes that Amon serves as a leader of The Seraphites, a religious faction based in Seattle.
Sarsgaard's other notable roles include Bartholomew Bogue in The Magnificent Seven, Gil Colson in The Batman, and David Goldman in An Education (shown below).
As hinted at in The Last of Us season two's finale, the third season will primarily follow Abby's storyline in Seattle. It will also introduce several new characters from the games, such as Patrick Gibson as Abby's father Jerry, as well as fellow Seraphites Yara and Lev, portrayed by Michelle Mao and Kyriana Kratter respectively.
Though The Seraphites were referenced during the second season, the group is expected to have a significantly larger role in season three (without revealing spoilers). Earlier this year, we received our first glimpse of Kaitlyn Dever's Abby and Kratter's Lev on set, though filming in Vancouver has been temporarily paused due to the World Cup.
While a release date has not yet been announced, the third season of The Last of Us is anticipated to be its final one. In July, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann revealed he would be stepping away from the series after season two to concentrate on the studio's gaming projects, including Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Druckmann had previously served as a co-showrunner, director, writer, and producer on The Last of Us TV adaptation.
HBO's CEO Casey Bloy has expressed that he is not concerned about The Last of Us continuing without Druckmann, noting that he "gave us a good blueprint with the show."
