The wuxia-inspired action game Phantom Blade Zero is widely considered one of the most highly anticipated titles of 2026, yet no game generates as much excitement as Grand Theft Auto 6, as evidenced by the numerous schedule adjustments made to steer clear of November. Consequently, it was especially surprising when Phantom Blade Zero received a release date during June's State of Play showcase that positioned it closer to Rockstar's game than most are inclined to venture.
In fact, developer S-Game shifted the launch from its previously announced September 9th date to October 29th. This places it merely three weeks ahead of GTA 6's November 19th release.
However, when asked how concerned they are about overlapping with GTA 6, the team at S-Game indicated they are not particularly worried. Speaking with PC Gamer, game director Qiwei "Soulframe" Liang remarked: "Many people may think we have some marketing strategy to move it from the overcrowded September, and some are very worried that it's closer to November." "We don't think about any of this. We only think of the quality of the product itself."
Liang stated he does not believe competition significantly influences the success of one's work, adding that "only the product itself matters. So I would say 99 percent of the decision [was about] development."
Phantom Blade Zero does not belong to the same genre as GTA 6, but the same holds true for the numerous other titles attempting to avoid it. Phantom Blade is a Soulslike action RPG featuring flashy melee combat, so it does not directly compete with GTA in that regard. Their concern, however, is that such a high-profile release will dominate all attention as everyone rushes to discuss and play it, leaving others unnoticed.
This explains why the September-to-October release window now sees more game launches squeezed together than perhaps ever before during that period. As release date announcements piled up at Summer Game Fest, it became evident that a GTA 6-shaped black hole exists in the release calendar.
For the Phantom Blade Zero director, though, GTA 6 is not the bogeyman it might appear to be. "I have no idea, actually," Liang said when asked if it was daunting to release so near GTA 6.
"What matters is how polished the game is, and if we have one or two extra months, we can fix more bugs, do more optimisations, so that we don't need a huge day one patch."
Of course, releasing so many games in close succession presents its own set of similar challenges. We are already witnessing titles being postponed to dodge the congested period. This week, the launch date of first-person Soulslike Valor Mortis was pushed back, moving from September 24th to October 13th. And that previous date had only been announced the week before Summer Game Fest.
Looking forward, Phantom Blade Zero is slated to receive a dedicated PlayStation State of Play showcase later this summer, featuring 15 to 20 minutes of new footage. The game officially launches on October 29th for PC and PS5.
