Spyro: A Realm Beyond
"It simply was a no-brainer."
Spyro: A Realm Beyond came to be solely because of "vocal and persistent" fans.
That’s according to associate creative director Lou Studdert and Toys for Bob studio head Paul Yan, who shared with GamesRadar+ that the team had "always wanted to go back to the Spyro universe, to move that character forward, and so the timing was right, and we left it up to fate".
"Honestly, Spyro holds a special spot in our studio’s heart," Studdert said, reflecting on the studio’s work on Spyro Reignited Trilogy and the Skylanders series.
"We’ve always appreciated that small yet mighty underdog narrative of the character taking on huge challenges, you know, we see a bit of ourselves in that, and honestly, it simply was a no-brainer."
Speaking directly about how the community pushed the studio to propose a new game, Yan added: "Every year, at every gaming event, we hear the fanbase show up, like, 'when is a new Spyro game coming?' even before we had even pitched this.
"When we approached Xbox and said, listen, here’s our proposal, we said, 'Look, there’s a community, it’s vocal and persistent, they know what they want, you’re here to make this game, what more do you need, let’s get this moving.'"
Yan continued: "We love Spyro, love Banjo, love all those kinds of games. We’ve been doing this all along. It’s not a new direction we’re taking, but we want to bring that kind of experience into the world.
"We believe the world needs these kinds of experiences, and we want to create them."
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is scheduled for release in spring 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with Spyro’s former voice actor Tom Kenny returning to reprise the role. This represents the first original Spyro game in nearly 20 years.
