Halo: Campaign Evolved

A new leader arrives.

One of 2025's most surprising announcements was the arrival of Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5. Xbox's legendary "mascot" is no longer confined to Microsoft consoles and PC. This nearly hinted at a broader strategic change, yet Gears of War: E-Day is skipping Sony's console, despite last year's second Gears of War remaster making that transition. Now, Halo's pre-orders on PS5 are looking strong, sparking further curiosity.

As highlighted by Push Square, Halo Campaign Evolved's pre-orders on the PlayStation Store are performing impressively so far. Although specific figures are unavailable, Master Chief is dominating on the UK store, where the standard edition is currently the top-selling pre-order (and the premium package sits within the top five). In the US, Halo hasn't climbed as high yet, but its premium edition holds the seventh spot as of this writing.

The Unreal Engine 5-powered remake is also seeing significant success in France, where the pricier edition leads the digital charts. In Germany, the pattern is comparable, though it's Halo's standard edition that takes the lead there. Even if some regions are more enthusiastic about Master Chief's return than others, a clear trend is developing, and it raises the question of whether a major PS5 launch could prompt Xbox to reconsider its (still unclear) strategy regarding big console exclusives.

In fact, Halo: Campaign Evolved's marketing appears to be leaning toward PS5 over Xbox, despite Halo being the Xbox IP most closely tied to the brand. Ports like Forza Horizon 5 and Sea of Thieves have already demonstrated interest in Xbox IP migrating to Sony's platform, making it fascinating to see where things go next.

For now, Eurogamer's Dom Peppiatt went into Halo: Campaign Evolved's hands-on demo expecting to dislike it, but has come away convinced: "It has revitalized the first game with the best elements of the following six."
