The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Laying it all out
The multiplayer mod for *The Witcher 3*, renowned as the top tool globally for constructing massive towers of multiple Geralts precariously balanced on one another's shoulders, has gained a new feature. You can now gather with friends at a tavern to compete in Gwent matches, an idea so compelling that CD Projekt developed an entire game around it.
As revealed on The Witcher Online mod's Discord, the newly launched 3.0 update focuses on enabling groups of Geralts to showcase their card collections.
As shown by modder Rejuvenate in the video above, you can issue challenges to other players for Gwent games using the interaction menu that appears when you approach them via the mod. From there, you decide if you want a match with timed turns to prevent endless deliberation over moves, and select the amount of gold you'd like to wager on your victory. The decks and cards available to you are those you've gathered in your *Witcher 3* playthrough up to that moment, so completing some of the Gwent-related quests alone first seems advisable.
Given that the mod allows players to ride around on each other's shoulders, I'm a bit disappointed there isn't a formal option to bet a free piggyback ride from Crow's Perch to Novigrad on a match, but nothing prevents such a thing from being added as a verbal agreement.
On a more serious note, since CD Projekt ended active development of their Gwent game in 2023 (though servers remain operational and the community now manages balancing updates), I understand the appeal of challenging your friends to Gwent matches via The Witcher Online instead. It's also not as if CD Projekt's Gwent allowed you to follow up games with a multi-Geralt dance battle. This 3.0 update also resolves a collision bug that happened when sitting on certain chairs in taverns, so settling in for a card game is less likely to end in a glitchy manner.
If you're interested in trying Witcher Online, you'll need a legitimate copy of *The Witcher 3* from either Steam or GOG, updated to version 4.04. If you're uncertain about your current version, verifying the game files should bring you up to that latest one. The Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone DLCs, along with the Community Patch - Shared Imports mod, are also essential. A setup guide from the modders themselves covers the rest.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to meet that obvious cheater with the Nilfgaard deck outside for a sword duel.
