Capcom appears to be fully embracing its 'unexpected update' phase. Following last week's return to the two-year-old Dragon's Dogma 2 to polish it ahead of the Dark Arisen expansion, the PC version of 2011's Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has also gotten its first new patch in years. Unfortunately, it seems to have caused more problems than it solved.

This new patch for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is the first to feature actual Steam patch notes since 2017, though they are sparse. Capcom states that the update offers "verified compatibility with Windows 11" along with "miscellaneous bug fixes," which sounds promising in theory. In practice, however, it has directly disrupted Jean Grey's Dark Phoenix ability.

"From what people have found, Dark Phoenix no longer triggers," a Reddit user wrote, "but other known bugs like Frank's zombie plungers are still there." Another community member explained that before Capcom's update, Grey "basically [had] no health so her entire gameplan involves getting five metre stocks and dying which activates a buffed Dark Phoenix state which is the strongest character in the game." Now, though, "she will die instead of transform."

Additional controversial adjustments include a fix aimed at preventing players from using the 'Kubota escape'—a mechanic that originally appeared as an unintended "bug" but has since been adopted by the community over the years. Unsurprisingly, Capcom's update has also disrupted many of the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 mods created in the years since the publisher's last game update.

Capcom has not yet commented on the patch, but players are now anticipating a hotfix.
